The Olympic Games – History
The Olympic Games were created in Ancient Greece, and they were held to honor Zeus, the father of the Gods. The first Olympic Game to ever be recorded took place in 776 BCE. According to the story, they were founded by Pelops, the King of Peloponnese and they were taking place in Olympia.
The Olympic Games were in the antiquity reserved exclusively for young men from the Greek world which were challenging each other for the glory and a wreath of olive leaves.
The competition included sports activities such as wrestling, long jump, discus, running, javelin throwing, chariot, horse racing, and the pancratium.
The Olympic Games were considered as a holy festival. The Games were starting every full moon of August and all wars had to stop while the competition was happening. The Romans also joined in the Games, during the Pax Romana. It is however in 395 AD that the Emperor Theodosius II decided to forbid claiming it to be paganism and destroyed the temples and stadiums of Olympia where the competitions were happening.
It was then in 1896 that Pierre de Coubertin decided to reinstitute the event into the modern era and made the Olympic Games the biggest sports event worldwide. The Olympic Games first took place in Athens in the restored “Panathenaic Stadium” (Kalimarmaro).
In 2004, after 104 years, the Olympic Games returned to their birth country. Athens Olympic Games 2004 welcomed athletes from 200 countries for 17 days of hard competition. The Athens 2004 Olympic Games took place in August in the impressive Olympic Stadium (OAKA), while sphere took place in the ancient stadium of Olympia.
2004 Summer Olympics
The 2004 Summer Olympics held in Athens also called the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad and known as Athens 2004 is an international multi-sport event held from 13 to 29 August 2004 in Athens, Greece.
The Games sees 10,625 athletes compete, some 600 more than expected, accompanied by 5,501 team officials from 201 countries, with 301 medal events in 28 different sports.
Athens 2004 marked the first time since the 1996 Summer Olympics that all countries with a National Olympic Committee were attending, and also marked the 1st time Athens hosted the Games since their first modern incarnation of the Olympics in 1896. Athens became one of only four cities at the time to have hosted the Summer Olympic Games on two occasions (together with Paris, London and Los Angeles).
